Changed my tune on those bargain-bin cutterhead teeth
Burned through a set from 'RiverBargainSupply' in under 80 hours on the Ohio job, cost me nearly $2k in downtime and replacement. What brands actually hold up for you guys on sandy-silt bottom?

Tell me about it. We tried a no-name brand on a Lake Erie project last year and they were shot by Friday. Switched to the heavy-duty teeth from Great Lakes Dredge and the difference was stupid. They just kept going through that muck and sand mix. The crew stopped complaining about constant changes, which was a nice bonus.

Switched to the heavy duty ones from Michigan Marine last fall and they handled the clay like butter. What mix are you guys digging in now?

Got burned the same way last season on the Mississippi. Learned the hard way that the cheap teeth are just a down payment on a bigger bill. Switched over to American Dredge parts and it was like night and day, they just eat through that abrasive mix. You pay more up front, but they last three times as long in sandy silt. The downtime savings alone made up the cost difference in a month.
