Why does nobody talk about dredging in tropical river systems?

I worked on a project in Costa Rica a few years back. The plant growth and water temperature there really change how the dredge runs. We had to stop often to clear vines and roots from the intake. It made me see how much the environment affects our work. Now I always ask about local conditions before taking a job far from home.

It's the same story in most fields. People skip over local details and then wonder why their plans fail. Environment always messes with the best laid out methods.

The Denver airport baggage system is a classic case. Engineers designed it without considering the high altitude and dry air. Belts snapped, carts jammed, and it cost millions to fix. That's the story in most fields, like thomas88 said. Skip the local details, and your plans fail. Environment always wins.

Maybe dredging isn't so different, @thomas88 (despite the vines).
