My neighbor's smart doorbell rant changed how I see gadget reviews

I was talking to my neighbor about his new smart doorbell last week. He went off on how every review he read was super positive, but the thing has so many bugs! It made me think that online reviews might not tell the whole story. Now I always check with friends or family before buying anything tech. It's way more reliable than just reading stuff online!

Yeah, totally get where you're coming from. I used to just buy stuff based on the top reviews and assume it was fine. Hearing your neighbor's story kind of hits different, like you realize how many people might just not bother writing a bad review. Makes me way more likely to ask around now too, because a real person telling you it's junk means more than some stars on a screen. You're right, that personal take is just way more solid.

But when you say a real person's take is "way more solid," I wonder if we're putting too much stock in that too. People love to complain to a friend way more than they'll bother writing a review, so that story might get juicier each time. Guess both online reviews and friend advice can be pretty biased.

What do you think stops people from writing honest bad reviews online, like your neighbor's doorbell issues? Ruby804 has a point about people just not bothering, which makes those glowing reviews feel kinda fake. I wonder if it's because complaining feels like more work, or maybe folks just move on to the next gadget. That gap between the hype and the real bugs is exactly why a chat with a friend beats a five-star rating.
