My bench time taught me to avoid electronic hearing protection
Everyone pushes those pricey electronic muffs for shop noise. I tried a pair and they cut out at the worst time during a function check. That moment sold me on plain foam plugs for good. They never fail, cost pennies, and let me hear normal talk just fine. Going against the grain here, but simple is safer in my book.

You nailed it with the reliability point. My old man always said the more parts something has, the more ways it can fail. Electronics add circuits and batteries where you just don't need them. That peace of mind knowing your hearing protection will just work every single time is huge. It lets you focus on the job instead of wondering if your gear will cut out. Simple tools often are the best ones.

Wait, your dad actually said that? I thought that kind of old-school wisdom was totally lost now. Everything's got a chip and an app these days, even my coffee mug. But he's right, isn't he? A plain hammer never needs a software update, and my basic ear muffs don't care if the battery's dead. It makes you wonder why we keep adding failure points to things that worked fine simple.

Right? I worked with a guy who had fancy electronic muffs, and they died halfway through a shift near the dish pit. Couldn't hear a word anyone said over the steam and clatter, it was a mess. My basic ones from the hardware store have never let me down, and I don't have to remember to charge another thing.
