Struggling with worn threads on vintage bolt actions

I've been trying to fix up an old Mauser rifle. The threads on the bolt are so worn down that my regular taps just slip. How do you guys handle recutting threads on these older guns?

Man, I'd skip the tap and use a thread repair insert instead. Those old threads are probably too far gone for a clean recut.

Honestly, I've fixed worse with just a tap, so 'too far gone' might not apply.

Feel your pain with those old threads, they can be a real headache. I'm with @jana672 on this, a good insert is probably your best bet.
