That viral 'one hour' mug cake trend from last year was a total disaster for me

I tried that mug cake recipe that was all over TikTok, the one where you mix flour, sugar, and milk in a cup and microwave it for 60 seconds. Mine came out as this rock hard, burnt smelling blob that stuck to the mug like cement. I scraped at it for like 10 minutes with a butter knife and ended up chipping the mug. After that I tried three more variations from different creators, each one somehow worse. The last one was so runny it spilled all over the microwave turntable and made a sticky mess that took forever to clean. I guess the hype hid how finicky these recipes are, what with everyone's microwave wattage being different. Has anyone else had a viral cooking trend fail so badly you just gave up on the whole category?

Blame the mug not the recipe. I've made that thing at least a dozen times with no issues because I actually bothered to check my microwave wattage first. People just grab the nearest coffee mug that's twice the size of what the recipe calls for and cram the ingredients in there without measuring right. You might have also used the wrong kind of flour or let the batter sit too long before nuking it.

Did you use a standard microwave-safe mug or one of those thick ceramic ones? @morgan.jason I had the same thing happen my first try, so I switched to a shallow bowl and it came out perfect every time since. Also started setting the microwave to 70% power and adding 15 seconds to the cook time, which fixed the raw middle issue.
