A lead mechanic in Wichita showed me his torque wrench never gets stored set to spec, and now I check mine monthly
I was at a hangar in Wichita helping a buddy on a 172 annual when the lead mech there mentioned he never stores his torque wrenches at the low setting. He keeps them all the way down at zero, and he said it has kept his 15 year old wrench within 2% on the calibration check. I had been leaving mine set at 40 ft-lbs for quick jobs because it was easier. Pulled mine out the next week and sent it in, came back reading 6% high at the low end. Cost me $75 to get it fixed and recertified. Now I zero them out after every job, takes two seconds. Any of you guys storing yours set or down at zero?
Boy, I learned that one the hard way too. Left mine cranked to 80 ft-lbs for about three years because I figured it was close enough for what I was doing, and when I finally sent it in the shop said it was reading way off. So yeah, now I zero everything out like some kind of reformed wrench sinner, and my tool guy still laughs at me when I bring them in for checks.
