The lead at my shop told me to quit using safety wire on my torque wrench and use a sharpie mark instead, and I fought him on it for a week
He caught me re-safety-wiring the adjustment collar on a 250 ft-lb wrench during a flap actuator job in Tulsa and said the wire was fighting the spring and throwing off my numbers on the low end, so I ran 10 fasteners at 40 in-lbs with the wire off and got way tighter spread. Now I just mark the collar with paint pen and check it against the setting after each click, and my rework on small hardware dropped to zero in the past 4 jobs. Am I giving up a real safety net here, or is the wire on the collar just a habit we picked up from the calibration guys?
So the safety wire was basically sabotaging your low-end torque the whole time and nobody caught it until now? That's not a safety net, that's a rattlesnake in a shoebox...
