Ran a 22/4 and a 22/2 to the same keypad, and the 22/2 won for the weirdest reason
Last month I did a panel swap in a brick ranch over in Toledo, and the homeowner had an old keypad run with a single 22/4 stapled tight along the top plate. I needed a second run for a new zone, so I figured I'd just pull another 22/4 and keep it simple. But the attic was packed with blown insulation and I only had a box of 22/2 on the truck, so I said forget it and ran the 22/2 with a separate ground wire. The odd part is the 22/4 run kept picking up a low buzz on the data line whenever the AC kicked on, which was driving the panel crazy with false tampers. The 22/2 with its own ground ran clean all week, no noise, no resets, and the homeowner even said the chime sounded sharper. I went back and re-ran the old leg as 22/2 too, and the buzz was gone for good. Now I'm second guessing every bundle of quad I've ever stapled next to a compressor line. Has anyone else noticed quad acting like an antenna near big motors, or was this just a fluke on this one house?
