I called Death Note overrated for 3 years until my roommate bet me $20 I couldn't finish it in a week
Now I'm wondering if the first 12 episodes hook people so hard that the second half gets a free pass, or if I just got stubborn and missed the point the whole time, so which side are you on: does the show earn its hype or does it coast on that early momentum?

The "first 12 episodes hook people so hard" thing is close but it's not quite the split. The real break is around episode 25, when L dies. Everything before that is a cat and mouse game between two people who actually respect each other, and that's what people fell in love with. After that you get Near and Mello, who are basically L lite, and the whole thing turns into a chess match with no personality. So the first half doesn't coast into a bad second half, the show just loses its best character and never finds a way to fill that hole. The hype is earned for about 25 episodes and then it's running on fumes.
