The fansub group that got me through 2006 finally explained itself
Back in 2006 I was watching this obscure mecha show that only had like 3 fansub groups working on it, and one group always put these weird translator notes at the top about Japanese tea ceremonies and train schedules. I thought they were just showing off, so I switched to another group and missed like half the plot because they kept using different names for the same character. After 4 months I went back to the first group and realized those notes were actually explaining cultural stuff that made the whole story click, like why a character bowed a certain way or what the festival meant. That got me thinking about how much context we lose when we just watch subs without the notes, and now I look up the source manga or light novel before starting anything older than 2010. Has anyone else found that the older fansub releases with their extra commentary are better than the slick official streams we get now?
