Tried to watch Evangelion in Japanese without subs for a week

I was at my apartment in Chicago last month and decided to challenge myself by watching Evangelion raw with no subtitles. I made it through 4 episodes before I realized I understood maybe 10% of what was happening, and I was literally just guessing at the plot points. The worst part was when I got to episode 16 and thought Shinji was confessing his love to Unit 01, but it turned out he was just talking about plugging in the umbilical cable. I had to pull up a summary site to figure out what I missed, and I felt so dumb. Has anyone else tried watching an anime without subs and totally botched the meaning of a scene?

That's rough, bet you thought Evangelion was a love story for a second there.

Did you ever watch that one show where a guy fights a giant puppet, because I once misread a whole season thinking the main villain was just a misunderstood gardener? It was a whole thing with houseplants and everything.

Wait, how long did it take you to figure it out? I had something similar happen with a show about a baker who kept getting into weird fights. I thought the main conflict was about a stolen sourdough starter for five episodes. Turns out the guy was actually a secret agent and the bread thing was just a cover. @the_brian jokes about Evangelion but that's basically how I feel now when I zone out during a show intro. My advice is to always check the wiki after the first episode if the plot seems too simple. Saves you from wasting a whole season on a weird brain glitch.
