Bought a $90 multimeter that was way off, cost me a compressor swap

Grabbed one of those cheap clamp meters off Amazon last month, checked it against my Fluke and it read 30V off on the same outlet. Rewired a fridge relay based on that thing and fried the compressor, parts alone ran me $180. Anyone else trust their meters blindly or do you verify before touching a live board?
