PSA: Check those drum rollers on the old Kenmore 80 series before you hand the unit back
Pulled a 1994 Kenmore 80 series out of a rental in Toledo last Tuesday and the drum rollers had flat spots worn into them you could feel with a fingernail. Compared it to a 1998 model I serviced in the same building a week earlier and the difference was night and day, the older one had maybe 1/8 inch of play in the drum. Turns out the previous tech had greased the rollers instead of replacing them, and grease collects lint until the whole thing binds up. Anyone else seeing this on the 80 series or are the Whirlpool direct drives doing the same thing?
Those rear rollers on the 80 series are part number 349241T if I remember right, and they run about six bucks each so there is no excuse for greasing them. Grease plus lint turns into a paste that eats the shaft, and once that shaft is scored you are looking at a whole new roller kit plus the axle pins. I pull every drum on a used unit now, spin each roller by hand, and if it does not coast smooth and quiet it gets swapped. The Whirlpool direct drives use a different roller setup and they wear more even, but the front ones still flat spot if the machine has been run off balance for years. Check the drum glides too while you have it apart, because those wear out around the same time and nobody ever looks at them.
