Thermostat said 70 but my customer said 90, the fix was a surprise
Had a call last Tuesday in an old condo complex near the river. Lady was convinced her AC was lying because the thermostat read 70 but she was sweating buckets. I checked the unit, checked the ducts, everything looked fine. Then I noticed her smart thermostat was in some kind of eco mode that only ran the fan, not the compressor. She had set it three days ago thinking it would save power. I switched it to cool and the temp dropped fast. She paid me $85 for a five minute fix and I felt bad taking it, but she just laughed and said I saved her from buying a new unit. Has anyone else run into smart home settings that make you look like a genius for pushing one button?
That kind of situation rubs me the wrong way, honestly. Charging full price for a button press feels like taking advantage, even if she laughed it off. The real problem is these smart thermostats have way too many hidden modes that regular people don't understand. They're supposed to make life easier, but instead they just confuse folks and end up costing them money. Most people don't read the manual and the apps don't explain things clearly either. If the tech is that confusing, that's a design failure, not a customer failure. You did the right fix, but the industry needs to own this mess better.
