Saw a climber get hit by a dead oak limb in Council Bluffs last Saturday, please check your tie-in point twice
He was maybe 30 feet up when a widow maker the size of my arm came down and clipped his shoulder because he never looked above his anchor, and now I climb with a second guy on the ground watching the canopy the whole time, so who else runs a spotter on every removal?
Man that story gives me chills because I have been that guy staring at my hitch and never once looking up. So when you say the limb was the size of your arm, was it still hung up in another tree or did it just flat out snap and drop on its own? And I am curious how you run that spotter setup, is the guy on the ground just watching the whole time or does he only lock in for certain cuts? The reason I ask is my brother in law helps me on big removals and I always wonder if a ground spotter is actually watching the canopy or if he is just standing there on his phone. Sounds like your system is the real deal after what you saw.
