A field tech in Utah showed me why I should trust the dirt layers more than my gut

I was helping on a dig near Moab last spring and kept arguing that a certain line of rocks was a wall foundation. The senior tech, this older guy named Walt, finally stopped me and said, 'You're reading the shape, not the sequence.' He pointed out that the darker soil under the rocks had been disturbed by roots, not people. He had me trace the layer across the trench and it just faded out. That one conversation saved us 3 days of digging in the wrong spot. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple observation changed how they read a site?
