Just learned that 70% of orchids grow in trees naturally, not in soil

I was reading that new book on tropical plants from the library and saw that stat about orchids being epiphytes. It blew my mind because every orchid I've ever owned was potted in bark mix. So which side is right - should we be mounting orchids on wood like in nature, or are pots fine for home use?

Three skibidi toilet edits broke my brain at 2am

Was scrolling TikTok last night trying to find a recipe. Kept seeing these weird skibidi toilet videos where the camera angle kept changing every half second. One had a guy falling through a floor into a toilet. Watched three in a row before I realized my brain felt like static. Anyone else get this weird dizzy fog from those rapid cuts or am I just old?

Can we talk about those folding saw ads on Facebook that show a guy cutting a tree branch with one hand...

Last week I fell for one of those ads for a folding saw that promised to cut through anything like butter. Paid $15 for it on impulse. Got it in the mail Tuesday and tried it on a dead branch in my yard. Couldn't even get through a 2 inch thick piece without the blade locking up on me. The video showed a guy using one hand like it was a magic trick. Took me three tries and a lot of cussing just to get a clean cut. I figure the ad was filmed with some kind of special demo blade or different tool entirely. Has anyone else bought one of those hyperdrive saws from a viral post and had it totally fail?

Finally got my neighbors on board with a community compost pile after 8 months of trying

I've been pushing for this since last spring. My street in Portland has 12 houses but nobody wanted to share a compost bin because they thought it would smell. So I just started my own little pile in my backyard and kept quietly adding to it. Last week after the heat wave, I had some extra veggie scraps and knocked on doors asking if anyone wanted me to take theirs. Three neighbors actually said yes. Then one of them texted the neighborhood group chat and now six households are dropping off food waste at my place. It's not huge but it keeps about 15 pounds of kitchen scraps out of the landfill every week now. I'm thinking of getting a second bin. Has anyone else managed to get a whole block involved in something like this?

Talked to a retired journalist about the JFK assassination footage

Had coffee with a guy named Frank who worked for AP back in the 60s. He told me the famous Zapruder film was so poorly preserved by the time it hit newsrooms that most people saw a version that had frames spliced out accidentally. Made me wonder how many other historical hoaxes just come from bad handling instead of bad actors. Anyone else run into old media folks with stories that change how you see a famous video?

Old timer told me I was wasting good fat trimming briskets

About 5 years ago a retired butcher named Earl watched me cube a brisket and said I was cutting off too much of the fat cap. He showed me how leaving a quarter inch on there helps keep the meat moist during the long cook. I changed my whole trimming style that day and my briskets came out way better. Any of you guys get a piece of advice that completely flipped your method?

Saw a stat about cloud storage energy use that blew my mind

I was reading a report from the International Energy Agency and found out data centers use about 1-2% of the world's electricity, which is way more than I thought for something we just treat like magic. It got me thinking is this cloud boom just a fad that'll get too expensive and dirty to keep going or is it gonna be the norm forever? Has anyone else looked into how much power their cloud storage actually eats up?

That time a random guy on a forum told me to skip the first 3 episodes of Steins;Gate

I was struggling to get into Steins;Gate and someone on here said just skip the slow start and jump to episode 4. I did that and missed all the setup for the characters and the whole vibe. Ended up confused and had to go back and watch them anyway. Anyone else have a bad time following skipping advice on a show they were trying?

Question about my first Python project falling apart at line 47

Spent 6 hours building a simple calculator for my class project and the whole thing crashed when I tried to add decimals. My if statements kept skipping the float conversion and I had no clue why until a buddy pointed out my indentation was off. This is the third time tabs have messed me up and I'm starting to think I need a different editor. Does anyone else deal with these tiny syntax errors that eat up your entire afternoon?

Why does nobody talk about how suction depth actually drops off in brackish water?

I was reading an old Army Corps of Engineers report from 1997 last night while waiting for a tow and saw a chart showing a 15% loss in effective suction when salinity drops below 5 parts per thousand. Nobody at our yard ever mentioned this, and I've been running jobs on the Mississippi River delta for 3 years now. Has anyone else noticed their production numbers tanking in low-salinity zones, or is this just me finding excuses for a bad week?

Walked into a Miami tourist trap and spotted a 'genuine' Cuban sandwich shop with a menu full of typos including 'sandwhich' and 'pastrami'

Wait, did the guy actually admit that to you or did you have to call him out on it first? That's wild he'd just straight up say he's never been to Cuba while charging tourist prices for a sandwich he probably saw on Pinterest. Also curious what kind of "pastrami" they were trying to pass off because that's not even a Cuban thing last I checked. Dropped my crimper down a crawlspace vent in Louisville

The worst part nobody talks about is that split second where your brain goes "maybe I don't need those back." I had a brand new set of Klein screwdrivers slide right through a floor register grate last summer. Spent a solid ten minutes convincing myself they were just gone forever and I should order new ones. Then my stubborn side kicked in and I ended up crawling through crawlspace insulation with a headlamp at 9pm just to hear them jingle when I bumped the ductwork. Found them wedged against a damn dryer vent boot. Left them there overnight and went home mad.
