Found a 12 inch bone fragment on a riverbank in Montana and now I'm worried I did the wrong thing
I was walking a gravel bar near the Yellowstone River last Saturday and picked up what looked like an old bone sticking out of the bank, then realized it had cut marks on it. I wrapped it in my shirt, drove it home to Bozeman, and now it's sitting in a shoebox on my shelf because I don't know if I should call the state archaeologist or a museum first. Did I mess up by moving it, and what's the actual right way to report something like this?
