Stumbled on a pre-war pottery shard in my garden and it's blowing my mind
I was digging in my garden to plant flowers when I hit something hard. It turned out to be a broken piece of a bowl with a blue painted edge. I almost tossed it, but I washed it off and saw a tiny stamp on the bottom. A quick search on my phone showed it's from a pottery that shut down in the 1930s. Now I keep thinking about who ate from this bowl in my house decades ago. It's weird to hold a piece of daily life from before World War II. This has made me see my whole yard as a potential dig site. I never knew archaeology could feel so personal and close to home.

Seriously, what else do you think is down there?

Forget the 70s, trash lasts forever down there.

Actually, some of that stuff breaks down way faster than people think. Plastic lasts forever, but organic things rot pretty quick. You'd be surprised what just turns to dirt after a few years.

Old bones, weird bugs, and probably a whole lot of mud and regret. Definitely some rusted-out junk from like the 70s. Maybe a few creepy jars with labels you can't read anymore.
