TIL my trowel was older than the dig site, and it snapped mid-trench

I was brushing dirt off a Roman floor level near Bath last week when my 20 year old trowel handle just cracked in my hand, right as a volunteer asked if I'd found anything cool. I ended up finishing the whole trench with a rusty spoon from the site kitchen, and honestly it worked weirdly fine, has anyone else improvised tools on a dig like that?

My first season digging I snapped the head clean off my trowel on a chalk floor and used a plastic picnic knife for two days. The edges go dull so fast on chalk but you just keep scraping. A spoon is honestly genius though, that curve gets into corners way better than a trowel anyway. I still keep a spoon in my kit now just in case.
