Why does nobody talk about how 10,000 steps feels different on vacation?

I always thought step counters were just for fitness tracking, but last month in Chicago I hit 12,400 steps just wandering around the Art Institute and the river walk. It wasn't about exercise at all, it was about curiosity and pace. At home I'd be exhausted by 8,000 steps, but there I barely noticed because I kept stopping to look at things. That's when I realized the number only matters when you're not actually paying attention to it. Has anyone else noticed their step count spikes on trips and it feels completely effortless?

Is it really the steps, or just not having to rush anywhere?
