My neighbor pointed at a fuzzy dot in my shot and now I can't stop thinking about it

I showed my neighbor Larry a photo I took of the Andromeda galaxy from my driveway in Boise last Tuesday, and he asked why it looked like a smudge instead of the spiral in the textbooks. I told him it was 2.5 million light years away and that my camera was just a DSLR on a tripod, nothing fancy. He said that made it better, not worse, since the light hitting my sensor left that galaxy before humans existed. I've been staring at my own photo differently since then. Anyone here shoot with basic gear and feel like the rough shots end up meaning more than the clean ones?
