Showerthought: bought a used Star Adventurer for $180 instead of a new tripod head, and now I'm fighting wind every clear night
So back in October I had $200 saved for gear and went with a used Star Adventurer mount off a local guy in Denver. My old tripod is a cheap aluminum one from a big box store, and I figured the mount mattered more. First real session I got 45 second subs with round stars for like 20 frames, then a gust hit and half my M42 shots had trails. Tried hanging my camera bag off the hook and it helped a little. Now I'm wondering if I should've just put that cash toward a heavier tripod instead. Anyone tracked down a cheap way to weigh these things down without buying a whole new setup?

Did you look into sandbags? I read a thread on Cloudy Nights where a guy filled old tube socks with play sand and zip tied them to the spreader arms on his cheap aluminum tripod and said it cut his trail rate way down. Costs like ten bucks for a bag of sand at Home Depot. Only thing I'd watch is the total weight, because those spreader joints can bend if you go too heavy.
