I thought my water heater was dying, but a plumber in Decatur showed me I'd been flushing it backwards for 4 years
So my water heater started making this popping sound and I was sure it was on its way out, already getting quotes for a new one. Then a plumber named Ray came out and asked when I flushed it last, and I told him every spring like clockwork, feeling pretty proud of myself. He pulled the hose off and pointed out I had the drain valve hooked up on the wrong side the whole time, so I was basically just draining clean water and leaving all the sediment sitting at the bottom the entire time. Now I'm wondering how much of that "maintenance" I did actually did anything, has anyone else found out they were doing a home chore completely wrong for years?
Honestly that plumber might have just been messing with you, because if you hooked the hose to the drain valve that IS the right spot, the valve at the bottom is the whole point. The only way to flush it "backwards" would be hooking up to the inlet or the T&P valve, which is a totally different thing and most people would notice the water going the wrong way. Four years of draining still pulls plenty of junk out even if you leave some sediment behind, so you probably did more good than Ray let on. Sounds like he found a easy way to make you feel dumb so you'd trust him on the next thing he tried to sell you.
