Just realized I was tightening my hose bibs all wrong for 6 years

We bought our place in Decatur back in 2019 and every fall I'd wrench those outdoor spigots shut so hard I thought I was being careful. Last week a plumber came out for a drip in the wall and he just turned it with two fingers, said over-tightening wrecks the washer over time. He showed me the old rubber piece was all squished flat, which is exactly why it kept weeping. Anyone else find out they were doing a basic maintenance thing wrong and it cost them a service call?
