I just lost a whole afternoon and about $40 in materials trying to sand out a scratch with the wrong grit sequence.

I mean, I jumped from 800 to 2000 on this clear coat, thinking it would save time, but it just made a bigger haze spot I had to re-clear, so what's your go-to grit jump for light scratches?

Classic move, skipping grits like that. I've definitely created more work for myself trying to save five minutes.

My buddy tried to skip the 1500 step on his truck's hood last week. Ended up with a haze he had to re-sand for an hour. Sometimes those extra five minutes with the right grit save you a whole afternoon.

Ouch, that's a rough one... I've been there. For a light scratch in clear, I usually go 800, 1000, 1500, then 2000 before compound. What kind of clear coat are you working on, a modern hard one or something older and softer? That can really change the game.
