My uncle told me to always use a torch on old filler before grinding it out

He said heating it made it come out clean and saved time. I tried it on a '78 Ford fender in the shop last Tuesday. The heat warped the thin metal panel so bad we had to replace the whole thing. Cost the job an extra three hours and a new patch panel. I'm sticking with careful grinding from now on. Anyone have a better method for stubborn factory filler?

That 1978 Ford sheet metal is basically tin foil. Your uncle's torch trick works on thick quarter panels from the 60s, not that thin stuff. I learned the hard way too, warped a door skin beyond repair with a heat gun set too high. Stellat46 is right about old tricks backfiring, it's a different game now. Sometimes the slow grind is the only shortcut that doesn't cost you more time and money.

Yeah, that's the trouble with old tricks, they sometimes backfire on newer materials. I've seen so many shortcuts cause more work in the long run. Slow and careful usually wins out.

Right, but what's the worst shortcut you've ever seen blow up?
