My uncle told me to always use a torch on old filler before grinding it out

He said heating it made it come out clean and saved time. I tried it on a '78 Ford fender in the shop last Tuesday. The heat warped the thin metal panel so bad we had to replace the whole thing. Cost the job an extra three hours and a new patch panel. I'm sticking with careful grinding from now on. Anyone have a better method for stubborn factory filler?

Changed my mind about using a random orbital sander for final prep

I always thought any fine-grit paper on my DeWalt sander was good enough before finishing, but it left tiny swirl marks that showed under stain. I switched to a dedicated finishing sander for the last two passes and the difference is night and day. What's your go-to method for getting that glass-smooth surface?

Rant: my sister's friend works at a shipping port and told me something that made me stop buying those $5 t-shirts

We were just talking about a big haul video she saw, and her friend said they unload containers from certain fast fashion brands... and the clothes are often just thrown in loose, covered in dust and sometimes bugs, before they even get to the store. She said a single container can hold over 10,000 pieces, all just dumped in. It hit different because it's not just about how they're made, but how they're treated on the way to you... they're basically seen as disposable trash from the second they're made. Has anyone else heard stories from people who work in the actual shipping or receiving side of this stuff?

I help run a local help desk and see this all the time. Someone will come in and just say 'my computer is slow' without any other details. Last week, a user said exactly that, and it took 15 minutes of asking to find out they were trying to run new video editing software on a 6-year-old laptop. If you start with the specific task and what happens, you get a real fix way faster. What's the most vague question you've had to untangle?

Just saw a guy trying to fix a Leica with a butter knife at a flea market in Austin

I was at the Barton Creek market last weekend, looking for old lens caps, and I saw a vendor with a table of 'as-is' cameras. This guy picks up an M3, flips it over, and just starts jamming a butter knife into the film advance lever slot. He was trying to pry something, I guess. I watched for a full minute before I had to walk over and gently tell him that wasn't a great plan. He said, 'It's stuck, I'm just loosening it up.' The sound of metal on metal still haunts me. Has anyone else had to stop a total stranger from destroying a classic camera in public?
