Changed my mind about using a random orbital sander for final prep

I always thought any fine-grit paper on my DeWalt sander was good enough before finishing, but it left tiny swirl marks that showed under stain. I switched to a dedicated finishing sander for the last two passes and the difference is night and day. What's your go-to method for getting that glass-smooth surface?

Yeah, I learned that the hard way too. My orbital sander left those same little marks, so now I hand sand with the grain for the final step. It takes longer but it's the only way I get a truly smooth finish.

Swirl marks just add character to the wood honestly.

Wait, are you talking about actual wood or a wood finish?
