Switched from solvent base to waterborne last spring and my booth cleanup dropped from 45 min to 10
Made the jump in April after my PPG rep kept bugging me about it. I was dead set against waterborne for years, swore the color match would be off and dry time would kill my cycle. Two things changed my mind: my booth filters were costing me $600 a month in solvent waste, and my painter quit so I had to do it myself for a stretch. The cleanup is where it really hit me. Used to spend close to three quarters of an hour with lacquer thinner wiping guns and flushing lines. Now it's a rinse and done. Color match has been fine, maybe one blend job out of twenty needs a tweak. Anyone else make the switch and hate it? I want to hear the other side before I fully commit and dump my solvent stock.
Been running waterborne for about two years now and the cleanup time is no joke, I got most of my evenings back. What worked for me was keeping one solvent gun setup for small spot jobs so I didn't feel totally locked in, then phasing out the rest as I got comfortable. Dry time bugged me at first but once I got my booth temp and airflow dialed in it stopped being an issue, and a couple box fans made a big difference. Color match has been solid for me too, the only hiccups were metallics and even those were minor tweaks. I'd say don't dump the whole solvent stock at once, run it side by side for a month or two and you'll know pretty quick which way you want to go.
