That customer in Denver who brought in a 1994 Civic with bondo falling off the bumper taught me to always check for hidden rust before giving a quote

I was looking at a seemingly solid quarter panel on a 2005 Silverado last Wednesday in Ft. Collins, poked it with a screwdriver, and the whole thing crumbled into a pile of cancer that wasn't visible from the outside, so how do you guys catch rust that's hiding under paint before you start the job?

Mine did the same thing on a 1998 F-150 two weeks ago.

Classic Ford move, right when you think you've got a few more miles left in it, the transmission just gives up. Mine did the same thing on a 2001 Ranger last year, had to have it towed from the grocery store parking lot. At least the 98 F-150 is old enough to be cheap to fix, if you can find a mechanic who still works on those things.

You actually just reminded me of the time I was checking out a '92 Corolla that looked clean on top, tapped the rocker panel with a magnet and it didn't even stick because the whole thing was just body filler. How do you even train yourself to spot that kind of hidden rust without destroying the car first?
