Water-based paint made my last repair job smell way better

I used water-based paint on a car door fix last Monday. It dried quick and didn't have that harsh chemical smell, so it's nicer to work with and better for the environment. Do you guys use eco-friendly paints in your shops?

Wait you actually used water-based on a car door? How's that even gonna hold up? The clear coat and everything after? That stuff isn't made for the flex and weather a car goes through, man. I'm shocked it didn't just wash off or crack already.

Hey @corawest, when you said it's not made for the flex and weather, that was the old story. Modern water-based paints are BUILT for cars now, they have flex agents and UV protection. With the right clear coat over them, they handle sun and rain just fine. I used it on my own door two years back and it still looks perfect, no cracks or washing off. The tech has come a long way so it's actually a solid choice.

Feel for you davis.xena, that cracking sounds rough. Honestly it really does seem like the clear coat makes or breaks the whole job. Even corawest might be surprised if the steps are done right.

Yeah but what clear coat did you use over it, ruby804? Because I tried water-based on a fender once and mine ended up looking like a dried-up creek bed after a summer. Maybe I skipped a step or used the wrong top coat, but mine definitely didn't hold up like yours. My car had more cracks than my last relationship. Your door still looking perfect just shows I probably messed up the process somewhere.
