Shoutout to the shop in Fresno that reuses crush washers, but my old lead wouldn't let us
Two schools on drain plug crush washers at my shop in Fresno: my old lead handed out new ones on every oil change and called reusing them "a comeback waiting to happen", but the crew at the lube bay down the street says they've run the same copper washer through 4 changes with zero drips, so which side is right on this?
The "same copper washer through 4 changes" thing probably works fine, but nobody ever mentions torque when they brag about that. Copper is soft, so it squishes down and seals again, but only if you're not cranking it past spec trying to make up for a worn washer. Reuse it and torque it right and you're fine, reuse it and gorilla it on and you'll be buying a new pan. The real comeback risk isn't the washer itself, it's the guy who doesn't check if it's been flattened past the point of no return. Old leads hand out new ones because it takes the guessing out of the hands of whoever's rushing that day.
