Six months of watching my comeback torque values on head bolts finally paid off
Back in March I was seeing 15 ft-lbs of variance between my first and second passes, but after switching to a calibrated Snap-on wrench and torquing in three steps instead of two, my last five head jobs all came back within 3 ft-lbs. Anyone else notice a big jump once they ditched the old clicker for something tighter?
I read a machinist forum thread a while back where a guy measured his old clicker against a beam wrench and found it was off by almost 10 percent at the low end. The spring in those things gets tired over the years and nobody ever checks them. Three steps instead of two makes sense too, since you're not asking the gasket to crush and the threads to settle all in one shot. Sounds like you already figured out what took that guy a whole summer to sort out.
