Hot take: I saved $280 by having the carrier ship my truck to a terminal instead of my driveway
Last month I moved from Phoenix to Denver and got quotes anywhere from $1,150 up to $1,900 to ship my old Tacoma door to door. On a hunch I asked one dispatcher what it would cost if I just picked it up at their terminal in Commerce City instead, and he dropped the price to $870 flat. Turns out the last mile delivery is where a lot of the cost hides, plus you deal with the truck waiting on you to be home. I grabbed a $22 rideshare to the terminal and drove it the last 25 minutes myself. Anyone else tried terminal pickup, and did your quote change much?

Terminal pickup also flips the insurance question in your favor, since the carrier's liability usually ends the second your truck hits their lot and you sign for it, so any damage after that is on you either way. That actually works out cheaper for them too, which is probably why the price drops so much beyond just the last mile. Worth asking about their lot security though, because a truck sitting there a few days before you can get to it is a real risk nobody mentions.
