Saw a truck lot in Stockton quote two guys $400 apart for the same run

I was at a shipping depot in Stockton last week picking up a car with my brother and overheard the dispatcher give two different guys a price for the exact same route to Boise. One got $1,150 and the other got $1,540, same truck, same week. The second guy never asked anything, just paid it. I used to figure broker prices were pretty much set by mileage, but standing there for 20 minutes changed my mind fast. Now I ask two or three places and make them say the number out loud. How many quotes do you all bother getting before you book?
