Showerthought: I spent 3 years calling the spark plugs wrong and a 20 year old kid set me straight
Last Tuesday I was doing a plug change on a 172 and a new kid on the crew stopped me mid job. I had been torquing them to 35 foot pounds because that was what the old guy who trained me back in 2018 told me, and I never once looked it up myself. He hands me the Lycoming manual and points at the spec: 25 to 30, and you do it dry, not with the anti seize I was slathering on. Turns out over torquing and that grease can foul the threads and change how the heat transfers on the plug. Three years of me thinking I knew this cold. I pulled my log notes later that night and counted 14 engines where I did it my way. So now I'm wondering how much other stuff I picked up from people that I never checked against the book. What specs did you all inherit from a trainer that turned out to be off?
