Got caught in a surprise snowstorm on the High Sierra Trail near Hamilton Lake, and it completely changed how I plan my trips now.

That plastic bivy story reminds me of my friend Jake. He got caught in a freak hailstorm on Mount Hood with just a light shell. He had to use his pack's rain cover like a sad little poncho and huddle under a rock for two hours. Totally agree with @the_sean, a real bivy is a must now.

My buddy Mark forgot his tent rainfly on a trip to the Adirondacks last fall. Honestly, the weather turned so fast we got soaked through in twenty minutes. He ended up wrapping himself in a cheap plastic emergency bivy and it actually saved the whole weekend. Tbh, that little bag looked miserable but it kept him dry and warm enough to sleep.
