Just realized the 'sketchy' shortcut trail near Shenandoah saved me 6 miles and a soaked tent
Last June three of us were staring at the map at a shelter around mile 14, and this old guy with a duct taped trekking pole said skip the ridge and take the fire road down to the creek crossing. My buddy laughed and called it a goat path, so we sat there for ten minutes arguing. Ngl, we took it and it was wide, dry, and shaved off close to 6 miles on day two. The part that got me was the creek bridge was newer than anything on the main route, with actual boards and nails. Only downside was zero views the whole way down, just trees and one confused deer. Now I'm second guessing every shortcut I've ever turned down, so what's the sketchiest looking alternate you actually walked?
