Shelled out $340 for a fancy ultralight tent, returned it after one night in the Smokies and grabbed a $90 used one instead
The expensive one pitched like a wet noodle in wind and the zipper snagged every time, but the beat-up old model on Facebook Marketplace held up through a thunderstorm near Newfound Gap, anyone else find that the budget gear with more miles on it just works better?

The "fewer surprises" idea is exactly what I used to say all the time. I was the guy who bought the newest thing every season, thinking it was the only safe bet. Then my fancy new stove failed to light on a cold morning in the Sierras, and my buddy's beat-up old one started on the first try. I get that new gear feels safer, but honestly, the used stuff has been tested by real people in real conditions. That cheap tent has probably seen more storms than I have, and it's still standing. So yeah, I get where you're coming from, but my experience has flipped completely.
