Shoutout to the ranger in Yosemite who told me 90% of permits go unused
I ran into a backcountry ranger by the Lyell Canyon trailhead in August who said most people don't know that almost every no-show permit at Yosemite gets released back into the pool at 11am the morning of the trip. I checked the recreation.gov site the next day and snagged a 4-day Rafferty Creek loop on a Saturday with zero planning. Why is nobody talking about this instead of everyone fighting over the lottery six months out?
