Stop skipping the PCT water caches, found 3 empty this week

I hiked from Tehachapi to Walker Pass last week and three of the seasonal water caches were bone dry. People are grabbing a gallon and dumping the rest on their face without refilling, which is basic trail etiquette. The cache list on the PCTA site marks each one, but folks treat it like a vending machine. Has anyone else seen this getting worse in the southern sections?

Carried an extra 2 liter bag on the stretch near Idyllwild last spring just for this reason. When I hit a dry cache I left a note with tape on the PVC pipe saying when I checked it and how much I dumped in from my spare. Got lucky that a trail angel came through a day later and filled it, but the note helped them know it was a priority stop. It sucks that some folks treat this like a store, but adding your own supply when you can and reporting it to the PCTA hotline actually moves things along faster than just getting mad. Trail angels watch those lists, so a quick call or text gets a refill out to the desert sections way quicker than hoping someone stumbles on it.

Damn right. Leaving the note is key, saves everyone a wasted trip.
