The creek crossing on the Eagle Rock loop in Arkansas had a rope tied to a tree that saved me
Hiked the Eagle Rock Loop near Mena last weekend and there was a thick rope strung across the Little Missouri crossing at mile 12. Water was knee deep and moving fast, so I grabbed it and made it across dry. Who put that rope there and how long has it been up?

That rope has probably been there longer than most people think, and the scary part is nobody knows who checks on it. Paracord or whatever it is rots in the sun and gets weak after a year or two, so you could grab a rope that looks fine and have it snap mid crossing. The forest service usually hates these because they take on liability without ever agreeing to it. I'd treat any rope out there as a bonus, not a plan, and still carry a trekking pole or two for balance.
