TIL I was reading topo maps wrong for my first 3 backpacking trips

So I hiked the Mount Whitney trail last summer and kept missing the turnoff for Trail Camp. I was using a map I printed from some random site, and I didn't realize the contour lines actually mean something beyond just elevation. I ended up going a mile past my campsite and had to backtrack in the dark. How do you guys actually read those lines without getting lost? Is there a trick I'm still missing?

Wait, are you sure you were reading contour lines wrong, or maybe just using a map that wasn't detailed enough? I mean, the contour lines do show elevation, but they also tell you how steep something is based on how close they are together. Like, if they're super tight, that's a steep climb, and if they're spread out, it's flatter. I feel like the trick is more about paying attention to the trail itself and using the map to confirm where you are, not just the lines. For Mount Whitney, the turnoff for Trail Camp should be pretty obvious from the trail, it's like a big switchback area before the final climb. Maybe you were just focused on the elevation gain and missed the actual trail markers?

Whoa, I was totally the opposite. Thought contour lines were just for seeing how tall mountains were. Then I got stuck trying to cross a ridge that looked flat on my map but was actually a wall of granite. The tight lines were right there. Just didn't connect it. Now I always check for those tight clusters before planning my route.
