Burnt that stuff once and my kitchen smelled like a weird campfire for hours lol. The trick is to spread it super thin and check it every minute like a crazy person. Your friend is right about that smell sticking around, it's nasty. I still try it sometimes though because when it works you get these amazing little crunchy bits. Just gotta accept you might ruin a batch learning the timing.
