Swapped my gravel vacuum for a turkey baster after my koi spawned in the 150 gallon
I used to siphon the whole bottom every Sunday until a guy at the Austin pond club said I was stressing the fry, so now I just spot clean with a $3 baster. Anyone else make the switch, or am I just being lazy about the mulm?
The thing nobody talks about with basters is you actually see what you're pulling out. With a siphon hose you're just watching water and gunk fly down the tube, but with a baster you get that little puff of mulm in the bulb and you know exactly where it came from. Around fry that matters a lot because you can dodge the wigglers instead of sucking them up blind. I still run a real siphon once a month for the big stuff but the baster handles the in between weeks fine. A $3 tool doing the job of a $40 one is not lazy, it's just smart.
