PSA: My buddy swore his '97 Wrangler got 28 mpg on 33s, then I found the actual EPA number for a stock one
So last weekend my buddy Kyle is going on and on about how his lifted '97 Wrangler with 33 inch tires and a 4 inch lift gets 28 mpg on the highway, and everybody at the cookout just nods along like that's a real number. I finally look it up that night and a bone stock '97 Wrangler with the 4 cylinder was rated 17 city and 19 highway from the factory, and that's with pizza cutter tires and zero lift. Add big tires and a lift and you're lucky to see 13 or 14. I pull up the fueleconomy.gov page and text it to our group chat and Kyle goes quiet for like 20 minutes, then comes back saying he meant kilometers or some nonsense. The wild part is three other people at that cookout own lifted trucks and got real quiet too, because I think they all knew their own numbers were made up and just never said anything out loud. I'm not even trying to dunk on Jeeps here, but if your lifted rig is claiming better mileage than the stock rating it came with, something is off. Anybody else got a friend with a magic fuel economy number that falls apart the second you check the actual window sticker?
