Shoutout to the 3am airing of Mama's Family that taught me more about local TV than any class
Last Friday I was up at 3am with a sick cat and ended up on some channel out of Dayton showing Mama's Family with the original 1983 commercials still in it, like a local ad for a carpet place called Ollie's that I am pretty sure closed decades ago. My cat just stared at the screen while I sat there wondering if this was a rerun, a mistake, or somebody at the station falling asleep at the switch. Turns out a guy on a forum said some small stations still run old tapes because buying new ones costs too much, so the ads come with them whether anyone wants them or not. Now I kind of want to hunt for other channels doing this, because watching a dead store sell me a recliner at 3am felt weirdly cozy. Has anyone else caught a rerun where the commercials were older than the show itself?
Old ads aren't some cozy time capsule, they're just the station being too cheap to update their gear while still selling you the same garbage. A dead carpet store and a recliner nobody can buy isn't charming, it's lazy.
