My attempt to make a 3-foot tall gingerbread house cost me $85 in melted royal icing and pure regret.

Has anyone else had a baking project just completely fall apart, literally, and what did you do with the salvageable pieces?

Turned my last collapsed cake into a very sad, very delicious trifle.

Honestly that's the best possible outcome. A collapsed cake is just a trifle that hasn't admitted what it is yet. You didn't make a mistake, you just did the assembly steps out of order. Now you have a built-in excuse to drown it in custard and call it a win.

Wait, did you say EIGHTY-FIVE DOLLARS just on icing? That's not a baking fail, that's a full-on financial crisis! I would have cried over the sink. My biggest disaster was a layer cake that slid apart, but the ingredients probably cost ten bucks total. What on earth did you do with all that melted icing, just pour it down the drain?
